Mauritius Underwater Waterfall Illusion
The Mauritius Underwater Waterfall Illusion is one of the island’s most famous natural phenomena. Located off the coast of Le Morne Brabant, this visual spectacle is created by the movement of sand and silt along the ocean floor. Seen from above, it appears as if water is cascading into the deep, but in reality, it is a clever play of currents and sediment displacement. This illusion is best observed from aerial viewpoints, such as helicopter tours or high-resolution drone photography.
Formation and Geology
Mauritius sits on a submarine plateau, an extension of the Mascarene Plateau, where the seabed dramatically drops from shallow lagoons to depths of several thousand meters. The visual effect is caused by ocean currents dragging sediments from the coastal shelf into the deeper parts of the Indian Ocean. This creates a striking contrast between the turquoise lagoon and the deep blue abyss, enhancing the illusion of an actual underwater waterfall.
