L’Aventure du Sucre
Located in Beau Plan, L’Aventure du Sucre is a museum dedicated to Mauritius’ sugar industry. Housed in a former sugar factory, it traces the history of sugarcane cultivation, colonial trade, and local production. The museum offers interactive exhibits, historical artifacts, and tastings of unrefined sugars and local rums.
History of Sugar Production in Mauritius
Sugarcane has shaped the Mauritian economy since the 17th century, introduced by the Dutch and expanded under French and British colonial rule. By the 19th century, sugar exports became the island’s main economic driver. L’Aventure du Sucre, located in a restored factory, presents this evolution through machinery displays, old photographs, and interactive models.
